Spanish players have long made an impact wearing the blue of Chelsea, so ahead of La Roja’s last-32 World Cup tie against Austria tonight we thought we would pick out some of their best moments at Stamford Bridge.
The likes of Juan Mata, Cesc Fabregas and Cesar Azpilicueta will go down in Blues folklore for what they achieved during their time in west London – and plenty of their iconic contributions for us spring to mind.
We have selected some of the best for you to enjoy below. They’re bound to bring a smile to your face!
Albert Ferrer
Albert ‘Chapi’ Ferrer was the very first Spaniard to represent Chelsea around the turn of the new Millenium and though he was best remembered as a dependable right-back, his solitary goal was a brilliant one.
It came in the Champions League victory over Hertha Berlin in 1999/00 that secured our progression to the second knockout stage and it was scored with the outside of his right boot after a fine pass from Dennis Wise.
Fernando Torres
This one is easy! April 2012, Nou Camp, stoppage time. A long clearance freed Fernando Torres and after running for what seemed an eternity, he rounded his compatriot Victor Valdes, the Barcelona keeper, and passed the ball into the empty net to secure our passage to the Champions League final in Munich…
Juan Mata
…there, Torres won a late corner which Juan Mata curled into the box with trademark precision. Didier Drogba met it to keep our Champions League hopes alive, and not long after our European dreams came true.
Mata was voted our Player of the Year in both of his full seasons in SW6 and there are certainly no shortage of his best moments to choose from – but we’ve opted for that decisive role in Munich on our greatest night.
Cesar Azpilicueta
Cesar Azpilicueta left Chelsea in 2023 after 11 trophy-laden years at the Bridge in which he won the lot, and captained us to glory in several competitions.
Azpi was a player of consistent excellence rather than moments, but if we had to pick one, it would be his sliding clearance to stop Riyad Mahrez’s cross reaching Ilkay Gundogan for an easy tap-in in the 2021 Champions League final. That intervention stopped a certain goal and ensured the Spaniard became the second Chelsea skipper to lift the greatest prize of all.
Cesc Fabregas
The capture of Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona in the summer of 2014 was a major coup, with the midfielder playing a vital hand in two Premier League triumphs during his time at the Bridge.
His standout contribution came on his debut, away to Burnley, when he set up Andre Schurrle to score with a cushioned first-time pass that was world-class in both its vision and execution.
Diego Costa
Diego Costa was born and raised in Brazil, but he represented Spain at international level so he is included in our list here.
Our top scorer in both the 2015 and 2017 title-winning campaigns, Diego Costa was a ferocious presence in the final third. Perhaps his standout moment was his equaliser against title rivals Man City in December 2016, when he chested down Fabregas’ raking pass and fired in to kickstart a comeback victory during our epic 13-game winning streak.
Pedro
Like Torres, Mata and Fabregas before him, Pedro arrived having won the World Cup and the Euros with Spain.
The winger was a classy and clever performer throughout his time at the Bridge, and his standout moment was the well-taken goal that put us ahead in the 2019 Europa League final against Arsenal, a game we would go on to win 4-1.
Marcos Alonso
When you think of Marcos Alonso, you think of goals he scored for us in big games, especially against the north London sides.
His brace in the 2-1 league success over Tottenham at Wembley in August 2017 is the pick of the bunch, with a sumptuous curling free-kick followed up by a late winner to spark pandemonium in the away end.
