Chelsea captain Millie Bright feels it’s her role to make sure the team remains united after a disappointing 5-1 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday.
The result leaves the Blues sitting third place in the table, 12 points behind leaders Man City and with one point fewer than Manchester United in second, with seven games remaining.
While a heavy defeat is not something this side is accustomed to, Bright wants the players to come back stronger after having taken some time to pause and reflect.
‘Yes, it's disappointing, but we have to move forward very quickly,’ said the skipper afterwards. ‘The girls have 24 hours to process their emotions now. Everyone's different, and it's important that everyone does that. But ultimately, we stick together.
‘That's my role, to make sure everyone stays on the same page and we move forward. Even out of that game, we have to find the positives. It's part of football. No one wants to lose, and definitely not in that manner by that amount of goals, but they're a top, top team.
‘I feel like we've had to bounce back in a couple of moments so far this season. It's just part of having that character. It's even harder playing for a club like this with so much expectation and being used to winning. It's the losses - they hit a little bit harder than anything else.
‘The most important thing is we bounce back on the training pitch and we go again and keep believing in each other. We will find the positives out of the game because there were some. It’s just a hard one to take.’
Despite the heavy scoreline, Chelsea edged Man City in terms of possession on Sunday, keeping the ball for 54 per cent of the match, and made 49 more passes than the home side in the final third of the pitch.
With that in mind, Bright believes it’s key to review the performance and seek out some positives before moving on to next Sunday’s fixture away at Tottenham Hotspur.
‘It's a difficult one because at half time, although we were 2-0 down, we came in and things were really positive,’ she continued.
‘I think we had more of the ball. We felt really good in the game. And I think we had probably some of our best passages, performance wise, in the first half, but they had two big moments and scored both of them. So I think that’s the difference.
‘These games really are about fine margins and most importantly, we stuck together as a team right until the end. I don't think any player could have given any more than we gave in that whole match.
‘It just wasn’t our day. There's a lot to reflect on, but ultimately, every game moving forward is a must-win.
‘At the end Sonia said some words, and we have to stick together. We've all been in positions where we've lost before and we're disappointed, but there's still so much to play for and there's still a long way to go in the season. It's not in our DNA just to roll over and feel sorry for ourselves.’
