Millie Bright recognised Barcelona’s ruthless edge was pivotal in their 4-1 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge yesterday, and while the skipper is understandably gutted to have exited the Champions League, she knows there is still so much to play for this season.

The Blues bowed out of European competition at the semi-final stage following an 8-2 aggregate defeat to the Spanish giants, who showcased their class with three quickfire high-quality goals before the break.

That burst ended any hopes of a Chelsea comeback, and Bright was frustrated it came after a period of Blues dominance that we could not translate into goals.

‘To lose both games is really disappointing,’ admitted Bright.

‘We gave ourselves a mountain to climb after the first leg, and it felt like they had three moments in the first half and three goals. We were on top in the first 20, and in their half a lot. It was a really positive start, but we just lacked that quality in the final third compared to them, where they had a shot and it went in the back of the net.

‘We still have a lot to learn, but we’ve seen spells in both games where we have the quality,’ added the captain.

‘We just have to make sure when we do get on top of a team like that we punish them and get one or two goals. Lessons learned is you just can’t make any mistakes against teams like that.

‘It’s disappointment. It’s a trophy we wanted. But I have no regrets from the game. It’s part of football. It’s hard to take. We left it all out there and managed to get a goal back. We performed until the end and that’s all you can ask for.’

Bright made sure to praise the Stamford Bridge crowd, who turned out in their numbers once more and stuck with the team until the final whistle despite the difficult circumstances.

‘The support from the fans means a lot. We play for the fans and we’re disheartened not to have given them the opportunity to go to the final and cheer us on there.

‘It was amazing to still see them at the end of the game cheering and chanting and applauding us. We will be back next year hopefully doing bigger and better.’

As painful as it is for our European adventure to come to an end against Barcelona in the semi-finals for the third year running, the Blues must pick themselves up quickly.

Sonia Bompastor’s side travel to Manchester United in the WSL on Wednesday knowing if Arsenal fail to beat Aston Villa earlier in the day we will have a chance to win the title in the North-West. We play the same opponents in the FA Cup final on 18 May, and Bright is confident Chelsea can recover quickly from this setback.

‘We’re processing it, dealing with the emotion, and everyone is different in that respect. It’s hard, but we’re back in [to Cobham] straight away for recovery and our mindset is on United,' she said.

‘We still have a lot to play for. We’ve had a fantastic season so far, but unless you have anything to show for it, it means nothing. We’re well aware of the task in hand.’
