Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo has revealed that every time he finds the back of the net for the Blues, it is down to a piece of advice given to him by his father.
The Ecuador international has gone from strength to strength for Chelsea this season and finally earned widespread acclaim for his performances, which have demonstrated why Caicedo is one of the standout players in his position in world football.
That has arguably never been clearer than last weekend against Tottenham, when the 24-year-old starred in the centre of the pitch and teed up the Blues' only goal in our 1-0 London derby victory.
Moises has come a long way since moving to England from his homeland in South America to sign for Brighton & Hove Albion in 2021. He then completed a switch to Chelsea two years later.
‘It was a very big change because I left my family back in Ecuador,’ recalled Caicedo. ‘I came to England on my own, so it was a very difficult moment for me because I had never separated from my family.
‘But it was a very good opportunity for me to come to England, to show my football. I am so happy because it was with one purpose – it was very good to come here.
‘Now I am enjoying every moment. Sometimes I remember when I came here and it so tough, but at the same time I just laugh, because now I am living a dream.’
Although his move to England took Caicedo away from his family, their guiding words followed him across the Atlantic. And one piece of advice has stuck with him as he continually looks to improve his game.
That is evident in the fact that his four goals so far this season – which makes him Chelsea’s joint-top scorer in all competitions – is twice as many as he has ever managed in England before.
It is also well on its way to matching the career-best six he scored for Independiente del Valle during his final campaign in his native Ecuador.
‘For a long time, my dad always talked to me and said I have to shoot on target, because I have a lot of possibilities to score goals,’ Moi said. ‘I tried to listen to my dad, that is why now I am shooting. So when I score goals, I just remember him. It is because of him.
‘Every day I want to improve because you never stop learning. Every time I go to training or play a match, I learn something. I’m doing fantastic, but I need to improve in every training and every match, because you never stop learning.
‘I’m doing it every day, so I am so happy for what I am doing at the moment, but I’m going to keep learning.’
Caicedo’s performances have contributed to a good run by the Blues; we have won three of our last four matches in the Premier League while tasting defeat just once in our last eight games across all competitions.
He and his team-mates are now hoping to extend that form with another Premier League victory when we host Wolverhampton Wanderers at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.
‘I think we are doing fantastic at the moment, so the feeling is very good,’ continued Caicedo. ‘We had a short pre-season, even though we started really well. We are so good and so happy because everything is really good at the moment.
‘For sure, our aim is to win trophies. It’s a big club, we always want to win trophies, but we go step-by-step because now we have four competitions, it’s a very long season, so we need to go slowly.’
