The latest episode of CFC Unlocked is now available exclusively for CFC+ subscribers to watch, with Morgan Rogers sharing how the most important period of his career so far shaped him as a footballer as part of a wide-ranging interview.
Rogers joined us in the CFC Unlocked studio at Cobham for an in-depth chat, showing off his Premier League knowledge with some quiz games and trying to solve Chelsea supporters’ personal dilemmas.
In the new episode, which CFC+ subscribers can watch in full below, Rogers discussed a wide range of subjects, including why he is so determined to make an impact in every game and how being a ball boy at West Bromwich Albion as a child inspired him to become a footballer.
He also reflected on his start to life with the Blues since joining in the summer and the journey that has brought him to Stamford Bridge, highlighting one period of his career as particularly important.
That came when he got his first taste of regular senior football in a series of loans from Manchester City. He spent time in the Football League at Lincoln City, Bournemouth and Blackpool before joining Championship side Middlesbrough permanently, eventually returning to the Premier League with Aston Villa and now Chelsea.
‘That was everything,’ he explains, when asked how those loan spells influenced his development. ‘I needed that next challenge, that next step. I needed to get out my comfort zone and kind of find the player I was going to be in professional football.
‘I think the academy player that I was, if you watch me then, I don't think it's the same player that you see now week to week.
‘I'm a completely different player and I had to learn that on loan, because academy football can be good to a certain extent and can teach you tricks of the trade and all the technical sides of it, because football's football.
‘But the actual way the game is played, the desire from the other team to win, what it takes, what teams are willing to do, how they're willing to play to win games, you can't replicate that in academy football. It's only in men's football.
‘For me to get that experience so young and so early allowed me to kind of move on and move up with time, so that when I was ready to make the next step up, I'd had experiences of the good and the bad to be able to deal with knocks and to be able to deal with playing in different types of ways.
‘So I think that really helped me be me. I think everyone's path is different. I wasn't ready. I needed time to develop, to learn, to understand myself more and to be here now at the level I know I can get to.’
