Morgan Rogers has given credit to Xabi Alonso for the way Chelsea have come flying out of the blocks in matches this season and explained why he believes Jordan Henderson’s impressive home debut is just the beginning of what the midfielder can do for the Blues.

Rogers found the net against Bournemouth on Saturday to put us 2-0 up in just the third minute of the game, as we raced into the lead on our way to a 5-1 victory over the Cherries at Stamford Bridge.

It was the fastest that Chelsea have ever taken a two-goal lead in the Premier League - and it was no fluke. We have scored the opening goal inside the first seven minutes in five our of six league games so far this season, with five goals scored inside the first four minutes of matches alone.

However, even among that trend, Bournemouth was something special, as Henderson gave us the lead with just one minute played and then teed up Rogers to got a second almost immediately from the restart.

‘It was a bit mad,’ reflected Rogers. ‘I think we were on the front foot straight away and that's what you’ve got to be, especially at home. You’ve got to get the crowd behind you.

‘It was against a really good team. They're playing really well and really good football at the moment, and we knew it was going to be tough.

‘To start like that, it gives you such an advantage moving forward into the game and that kind of set us off and got the precedent rolling. That's all you can ask for really.

‘I put it down to the manager's team talks before. He gets us firing, gets us going. But we always want to start off on the front foot.

‘It's about starting the game well and getting the lead, and that's been a lot of the games, especially at home, that we've kind of jumped on the back of scoring early goals. So it's a good trait to have and we need to keep it going.’

Henderson was making his first appearance for the Blues at the Bridge since joining in the summer and marked the occasion in style, with a fine opening goal followed by the assist for Rogers and then an unstoppable free-kick to complete the scoring.

Not that the veteran midfielder’s starring role came as a surprise for his team-mates.

‘People said he was too old and you see what he does,’ Rogers continued. ‘Everyone in the dressing room knows that he's probably still the fittest player at the club, to be honest. He's a machine.

‘People forget about the football because they just think he's that experienced head, but don't get me wrong, the guy can still play football. He's won everything in the game. You saw his quality there and we'll see it for the rest of the season, I'm sure.

‘Hopefully we’ll see more goals from him. He's got the ability, super quality. That's why he's on the free-kick, because he's got that ability to score from distance, and he did it twice on Saturday.’

That praise comes despite Rogers missing out on free-kick duty to Henderson over the international break, with the 24-year-old laughing as he explained: ‘It was a work thing last week before I was there actually. They did it behind my back and then when I've got back I'm off free-kicks all of a sudden! Which I wasn't the best happy about, but as long as we score, that's the most important thing.’

The victory over Bournemouth takes Chelsea up to sixth place in the Premier League table, only outside of the top four on goal difference. However, Rogers echoed the sentiment shared by Alonso that it is still too early in the season to be drawing conclusions on how the campaign will take shape, with the Blues just approaching things one game at a time.

‘As the manager said, and he's been saying all week, which is a good one which I'm going to use now: “We can finish bottom or we can finish first”. There's not been enough games to determine where we can finish and what we can do, and that's how we're taking it.

‘We want to improve ourselves and look at ourselves, which we will do, but we're not looking up and not looking down. We're just looking at ourselves, at how we can improve and get better, and there's a massive improvement already from the international break and having time off and players working.

‘We're working with the manager and trying to improve, so it's been really good, and we've just got to keep moving forward and stay focused.’
