Naomi Girma arrived at Chelsea in January to huge fanfare. Her transfer broke the world record fee in women's football, yet injury struck just as she was about to find her stride in the Women's Super League, and she spent a spell on the sidelines.
She returned to action just as Sonia Bompastor needed her the most. Girma played 46 minutes in the 4-0 win over Crystal Palace at Kingsmeadow that put us on the verge of securing the league title.
And when Nathalie Bjorn suffered an injury in Barcelona, Girma was ready to step up. She was named in the starting line-up against Manchester United at Leigh Sports village, and played her first full game of the season in the match that saw us clinch the Women's Super League crown.
Bjorn is now fit again. Against Liverpool this weekend, Bompastor played her in a back three alongside Bright and Girma. Two crucial games, two clean sheets. There's even more to come from Girma, but for now she is happy to have won her first league title in Blue.
She said: 'It feels great, honestly. It's been awesome. To have the trophy celebration here at Stamford Bridge has been amazing.
'I just think winning the title unbeaten shows the mentality of the club here. For me personally, I'm just grateful to have been brought in and to have played some minutes at the end of the season and help in any way that I could.
'It's good to be fit and healthy now. That's what you always want as a player. Coming in, the team really embraced me, even when I was out injured and not able to play. To get back in the squad now is a really great feeling.'
Girma was eager to pay tribute to those that had featured in the side from the beginning of the campaign, and spoke about the environment at Chelsea that has played a big role in our success.
She echoed the thoughts of boss Sonia Bompastor, who earlier this week said this title win has been far from easy, even though no side has been able to defeat Chelsea in the league in 22 matches.
'I mean, it's incredible,' she said. 'I think it just shows the work that this team has put in all season long.
'It's not easy. There are so many games, so many competitions, even just in the short time I've been here I've seen it.
'So it's a testament to the culture here and everyone playing a part.'
