Naomi Girma appreciates that 'every point matters' for Chelsea in the Women's Super League and wants the Blues to build upon the clean sheet kept against Tottenham Hotspur when Liverpool visit Kingsmeadow tomorrow (Sunday).

The Blues have had a full week to prepare for the Reds at Kingsmeadow and have been focused on building our defensive solidity.

After a standout personal performance in our backline against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, in which she made a team-high seven ball recoveries, the USA international is determined to build upon that display.

‘It feels good to be working towards Liverpool after a win, but we also know that this is a big game for us,’ she said. ‘Every point matters in the league – more now than ever – so I think we just want to make sure we stay focused and put in another good performance this weekend.

‘Defensively against Tottenham, we faced a lot of pressure and we did a good job handling it. That was one of our focuses going into the game and that's the one we want to build on again against Liverpool.

‘I was proud of the way we handled it as a group and also how I did personally. I think defending has been one of our focuses again this week, so hopefully that'll continue to improve for us.’

Chelsea have played Liverpool away from home twice this season, with two very different outcomes. In November, we battled to a 1-1 draw with only Alyssa Thompson on the scoresheet. But at the end of December, we recorded a 9-1 win over Gareth Taylor’s side in the Women’s League Cup semi-final.

‘The results against Liverpool have been very different for us,’ Girma continued. ‘I think this Sunday we just need to focus on ourselves, continue to put pressure on them, and hopefully the goals will come.

‘I think Liverpool are a great side, so I'm expecting the same from them on Sunday. We know it's going to be a tough game. They're very organised, they're very disciplined and we know we are going to have to really work to break them down and to have a good result.’

While Chelsea are nine points behind Manchester City at the top of the Women’s Super League, the American international explained the Blues are only focused on the next match, with plenty left to achieve this season.

‘Our aim going forward in the season in the league is to try to keep winning, keep picking up points,’ Girma concluded. ‘We want to compete for as many trophies as we can and I think right now we want to keep building on our performances and get better each game.’
