Naomi Girma has spoken of her gratitude and pride after the centre-back's superb defensive performance against Manchester United helped Chelsea secure the Women's Super League title.

The USA international arrived in January but after a spell on the sidelines with injury, the defender played her first full 90 minutes at Leigh Sports Village.

While injury has curtailed her minutes on the pitch, Girma was keen to praise her team-mates for the hard work they have put in all season.

'I just feel really grateful, really happy to win the title. I'm really proud of all of those that have been playing all year, and I'm just happy to have been playing when we were going for the title.

'I think overall I'm just really grateful and really happy to be here.

'One of the hardest things here is playing in so many different competitions at the same time. For us, falling out of Champions league was really difficult, but we knew that this game meant trying to win the title. I'm just really proud of us.'

Girma arrived on a permanent transfer from NWSL side San Diego Wave in January, and the defender confirmed the move has been exactly the right fit for her.

Although her game time has been limited, the environment at Chelsea has already made a big impact on the 24-year-old.

'Coming here is exactly what I wanted,' she continued. 'To play my best and be in an environment where there's so many great players coming together every day.

'Obviously I had a small injury, so I think just being with the group and being around the team mentality, I've got myself getting better, and it's just been a great experience so far.'
