When Naomi Girma joined Chelsea from San Diego Wave last January, the defender stated she had made the move to London with the intention of winning every trophy possible.

By the end of her first six months, the Blues had won a domestic Treble, as we lifted the Women’s League Cup, Women’s Super League and Women’s FA Cup trophies by the end of the campaign.

While Girma played in the latter stages of the WSL and FA Cup final last year, she missed our League Cup campaign and the final against Manchester City in March due to injury. That means she has unfinished business with the competition and has extra motivation to win Sunday's final.

‘It'll be very important to win a trophy, especially so early in the season,’ explained the defender. ‘It was one of our goals at the start of the campaign. We want to win every trophy, every competition that we're playing in, so to set ourselves up to win one so early is a testament to the work we've put in this season, and it'll be a great feeling to finish it off with a win.

‘I missed out on playing in the League Cup final last year, and I'm just excited for that atmosphere. As a player, those are the games you want to play, so I'm very excited.’

At Ashton Gate we face Manchester United for the second consecutive match on Sunday afternoon, having progressed through to the FA Cup quarter-final against them with a thrilling extra-time win at Kingsmeadow before the international break.

Girma scored the winner in the ninth minute of the additional period that day, and understands this could well be another closely-matched encounter.

‘Manchester United will be a great opponent in the final,’ she continued. ‘They're a great side. They've been having a great season, and I expect them to be hard to beat. I’m sure it will be a tough match.

‘We have to focus on ourselves, go in and stick together as a team. We need to be disciplined defensively against the threats they pose and then exploit them when we have our chances.’

It certainly sounds like our American defender knows exactly what's needed to come out victorious against Man United again this weekend as she looks to make up for lost time.
