Naomi Girma chose a brilliant time to score the first goal of her club career, so no wonder the defender was delighted as she reflected on our FA Cup victory over Manchester United.

The fifth round tie at Kingsmeadow headed to extra-time after Sam Kerr’s opener was quickly cancelled out by Simi Awujo.

In the ninth minute of the additional half-hour added on, Girma stabbed home from close range as the visitors couldn’t fully clear a Chelsea corner. Remarkably it was the first goal of a club career that is approaching 100 appearances, although she has netted twice for the USA.

‘I don’t even know how it fell to me, but I was like, ‘oh it’s here!’ and I just hit it in,’ smiled Girma.

‘It was a good feeling. I was happy it went in, happy we won the game and good for us to get through to the quarter-finals. It was a tough match and I’m just happy I could help.

‘It was tough for us to concede in the last minutes of regular time but I was proud of our spirit to come back in extra-time, get a goal and finish the game off.’

Girma reiterated the collective effort required to grind out the result - particularly when Manchester United were laying siege to our goal in the closing moments – as well as acknowledging the impacts subs like Sam Kerr had.

‘We just said everyone get back, everyone defend the goal, everyone do anything you can to stop the goal. We saw midfielders, forwards, everyone getting back, so it was a brilliant team effort.

‘Our gamechangers came in and did their thing. We have such a strong squad. That’s one of our strengths. I was really proud of the way we all contributed to the win.’
