Sweden international defender Nathalie Bjorn has slotted in perfectly at Chelsea since she moved from Women's Super League side Everton in January 2024.

She hit the ground running on arrival, starting eight Women’s Super League games in the run-up to winning the league title under Emma Hayes at the end of her first six months at the club.

Her second season in blue has been somewhat different, as she explained when she sat down with us before the final match of our domestic Treble-winning campaign.

‘It’s been a really good season, both individually and team-wise. I enjoyed it,’ she said. ‘I feel like I came in last season under Emma, quickly gained confidence and played, so I think that helped me at the start.

‘This year, it was great to have a pre-season with the team and get to know each other better, as well as the new staff and new coach. Winning the title is a little bit different when you're here from the beginning. That’s when you can contribute by playing a lot of minutes and helping the team to succeed.

‘I wanted to help as much as I could to help the team win trophies. I think I've done that. I enjoyed this year, especially spending so much time with the girls, because I love this group, both as players and individuals.’

Voted Players' Player of the Season in her first full season at Chelsea, those bonds Bjorn speaks about are apparent. Captain Millie Bright has already discussed her defensive partner being ‘easy to play alongside’ as well as being a key figure in the dressing room. The feeling is mutual.

‘I really love to play with Millie,’ Bjorn continues. ‘We've been so solid this year and we've played a lot together. The more games you play, the stronger the connection becomes, and the relationship grows. We complement each other very well.

‘We're good at communicating and discussing problems and situations that arise during games and training sessions. We are a bit different in the way that we play, but we have a good balance, and we get the best out of each other.’

A first full season at Chelsea for the Sweden international has coincided with the arrival of Sonia Bompastor as head coach. Bjorn has felt the benefit of being pushed to new limits by the boss and feels the team can continue to improve next season.

‘It's been a good year,’ she says. ‘Sonia wants to implement her style of play, and I think we can keep building on this fantastic season next year. I think we can be even better and even stronger. It takes time, you don't build it in a day.

‘Sonia has challenged us in a different way than we're used to. She got a lot out of us as individuals this season. She is a winner. She pushes us in training sessions and tries to lift us if we have a low day or whatever, and I think that's so important to have a coach who is aligned with the players.’

After playing at various sides in Sweden during her early career, Bjorn made the move to England when she secured a move to Everton in 2021.

Her past experiences have taught her that playing at Chelsea is something to be celebrated.

‘One thing I've learned playing at other clubs is never to take winning for granted,' Bjorn explains. 'Just because you’ve won trophies doesn’t mean that it’s easy. There are different squads every year. Things happen, and teams develop.

‘Being in this environment pushes you to the edge. So even if you have talent when you come here, you go even further to develop your winning mentality and push your standards to even higher levels in training. It's a unique environment to be in.’
