Pedro Neto is in upbeat mood as he talks about character and using your emotions on the pitch to fuel your performance in an exclusive interview with the matchday programme for this weekend’s game against Liverpool.
The flying winger has been in fine form recently and produced one of the moments of the season with his last-gasp winner at Craven Cottage a couple of weeks back. He talks about the need to make things happen at this crucial stage of the campaign.
'I think it’s the most beautiful part of football,' he says. 'The guys who want to be at the top have to live these moments and this is what I like to do, and I think all of our team-mates like to do.
'All of us want to be in these situations – all footballers like it when you have to step up and be there to help the team. You take joy from being there and getting results and this is the happiness of football – it’s trophies, it’s the memories, it’s what we are trying to achieve.'
Trophies and memories are very much at the heart of another programme exclusive this weekend, as William Gallas recalls his time at the club, including our first Premier League title triumph 20 years ago, and looks back on his encounters with Liverpool during that period.
'I played so many games against Liverpool, but it was always a very tough game, whether it was at Stamford Bridge or Anfield,' he explains. 'It was always a battle, but it was a good battle because when you play against the best teams, you always want to show what you can do.
'It brings back memories of a lot of challenges between Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard in the middle. I remember playing against Peter Crouch and John always said to me, ‘William, we can’t jump with him because he’s so tall, but we have to make sure we’re going to be very strong with him’. So it was almost like two against one with him, when I was playing as a centre-back. He gave us some problems, but most of the time we were dominating.'
We’re also celebrating Chelsea Women’s remarkable sixth consecutive WSL title triumph, achieved in midweek, and we hear from members of the Chelsea Heritage Partnership, who are hosting a live event celebrating our classic kits in the Tea Bar prior to the game.
There’s all the latest from Enzo Maresca, Reece James, Sonia Bompastor and our Academy coaches, not to mention a long read celebrating the career of Joey Jones, a hero to Blues and Reds alike.
