It was 1999 and Chelsea Football Club joined the rest of the world in standing on the edge of a new millennium. It was to become an era of unprecedented success and global prominence for the Blues and having recently been elevated to regular trophy winners and challengers at the top of the Premier League table, one achievement heralded that progress more than any other.

Chelsea had qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the first time with a squad packed with iconic players. Now, over a quarter of a century on, a new ’99 Gold retro range harks back to that momentum-shifting season and centres on one colourful feature of it – the eye-catching yellow third kit worn by those legends on the European stage.

Radiant Blues

Gianfranco Zola, Marcel Desailly, Dennis Wise, Tore Andre Flo, Frank Leboeuf, Didier Deschamps and Dan Petrescu are just some of the famous names who were in the all-yellow as the Londoners played in other European capital cities like Berlin and Rome, with the Champions League ball of stars on our sleeves for the first time.

With a cosmopolitan side managed by Gianluca Vialli, it was a debut in the competition that thrilled as we reached the quarter-finals with many memorable matches along the way, as well as breaking the mould in English football with a Boxing Day fielding of the first all-foreign starting XI.

Bringing a historic moment into the future with modern styling

The retro recreation of the third shirt worn from 1998 to 2000, which was also a time of FA Cup and UEFA Super Cup triumphs, is on sale as part of the new collection and it is joined by a range of tops, hats, a tracksuit and a scarf.

For those items, the golden tone is allied with a navy colour and the club badge from that era which has since become a feature of other collections as well as the current third kit. The result is a ’99 Gold range of clothing with a bold, colourful design that celebrates the past as well as being fashion-forward for fans displaying support for the current team.

With the full collection available in men’s, women’s and kids’ sizes, we have a t-shirt with a relaxed fit and yellow piping detail on the shoulders and arms. There is a matching cotton sweater and a polo shirt with tipped rib colour, which is in harmony with the cuffs and the collar of the replica shirt.

The tracksuit has a yellow zip and piping, providing contrast to its predominant navy tone, while the colour yellow features brightly on the collection’s scarf.

Topping off the range is a choice of a beanie hat and a cap, both with retro crest embroidery.
