Niamh Charles is hoping that England can deliver success both on and off the pitch at this summer’s Women’s European Championship.

Charles narrowly missed out on being named in the England squad for Euro 2022. After the Lionesses lifted the trophy that year, the entire side signed an open letter to the government, asking them to ensure every girl in the nation had the option to play football at school.

This time around, the Blues star has been included in the final 23-player squad for Euro 2025 and wants to continue bringing about even more positives for the younger generation.

‘It’s something we’re really proud of,’ she told That Lionesses Podcast this week. ‘It’s what we do on the pitch, but we’re using it as an accelerator to create change.

'When we were in Leicester the other day, we went out for a coffee and saw the number of young fans who came up to us. They all have their own story now because of the Euros, the World Cup or their own journey in football.

'Of course, football is the most important on the pitch here, but we’re aware that we have the power to create that change as well.'

Charles has 24 senior caps for England, having made her debut in a friendly against France in April 2021.

The experienced defender understands that whether fans watch from home or travel to Switzerland to watch the games in person, they will all play a role in supporting the Lionesses this summer.

‘It’s so special when we drive in on the bus and see people who have spent their hard-earned money to come and support us,’ she continued. ‘It gives us that extra bit of ‘OK, we want to make you proud, we want to make you enjoy it’, and that support means a lot.

'For those who can’t come, thankfully, social media means you can connect with fans in different ways.’

England face France in their opening match at the tournament on Saturday evening at 8pm UK time.
