Nicolas Jackson delivered an impressive second-half cameo in Sweden as the Blues took a commanding 4-1 first-leg lead over Djurgarden in the Conference League semi-final, but the Senegalese striker’s eyes are already firmly fixed on Sunday’s showdown with Premier League champions Liverpool.
Following goals from Jadon Sancho and Noni Madueke during the opening period, Nico came off the bench to score twice in a dazzling second-half display, helping us take a giant step towards our first European final since 2021.
Speaking after the match, the forward praised the team’s mentality and felt the Blues were extremely composed considering the lively home support.
‘I’m very happy we won and now we’re one step closer to the final,’ Jackson reflected. ‘They were good goals and confident finishes, especially the second one, but the most important thing is that we won. We will go 100 per cent in the next game.
‘We were very good. Especially when you come to a pitch and a stadium like this which you’re not used to playing, but we’re very happy we played very well, attacked very good and defended very good.’
Jackson revealed that he had studied the Djurgarden goalkeeper’s positioning before coming on, which helped inspire his impressive effort to double his tally.
‘[For my first] I knew they were in two minds so I just ran, tried to put my leg and the ball came to me,’ he said. ‘[For my second], I saw the goalkeeper from the bench and he was always out, so I said when I come on, I’ll shoot from outside of the box.’
Having taken a step closer to the final, Jackson has now shifted his attention to Liverpool, where we will face the recently-crowned Premier League champions on Sunday at the Bridge.
‘We will prepare like always – recover good and listen to the coach,’ Jackson added. ‘It’s about moving to the next one on Sunday against Liverpool and then we will see after that.
‘We’re focused on Sunday. It won’t be easy, but nothing is. We’ll just fight for more and try to win the next one.’
