Nicolas Jackson featured as a second-half substitute as Senegal kept their hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup knockout stage alive with a 5-0 victory over Iraq.
Having lost their opening two fixtures against France and Norway, Senegal needed to secure three points to give them a chance of advancing from the group stage as one of the best third-placed sides.
Jackson started the game among the substitutes alongside fellow Blue Mamadou Sarr, who was unused, and Senegal made the perfect start as Habib Diarra deflected a header from Abdoulaye Seck into the net after just four minutes.
Iraq were then reduced to ten men before the quarter-hour mark; referee Anthony Taylor dismissed Rebin Sulaka following a VAR review for denying a clean goalscoring opportunity by bringing down Sadio Mane.
However, it wasn’t until the second half that Senegal truly made their advantage count. Ismaila Sarr scored in the 56th minute, moments before the introduction of Jackson, who replaced Lamine Camara.
Fellow Senegal substitute Pape Gueye struck the Lions of Teranga’s third and fourth goals, before Iliman Ndiaye completed the goalscoring with an 82-minute strike.
The victory means Senegal have finished third in Group I with three points, which currently puts them fifth among the third-place sides. However, they still require results elsewhere to go their way if they are to advance to the knockout stage.
