Sjoeke Nusken can still not quite believe what she achieved this summer.
Nusken was a key member of Germany’s squad at the Paris Olympics, starting each of their six fixtures. They qualified second from their group with two wins and a loss, to Emma Hayes’ USA, before edging past Canada on penalties in the quarter-finals.
They were beaten by the U.S. again in the semis, only after extra-time. That set up a showdown with Spain to see who claimed the bronze medal.
In a dramatic contest in Lyon, Germany won 1-0. It needed an injury-time penalty save from former Chelsea goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger to preserve their slender advantage, spark pandemonium at full-time, and ensure they took a place on the podium.
‘It was a really nice summer,’ smiles Sjoeke.
‘I enjoyed it a lot. We won the bronze medal which was so amazing. I can’t believe it! It’s really hard to put into words what it means. We had a great team spirit and it’s such an amazing memory.
‘It was really nice being in the Olympic village and getting to know the other athletes,’ she adds.
‘Everyone wore the same clothes so it was nice to be part of the whole team of Germany. And we could celebrate the bronze medal together with every athlete which was really special.’
