Sjoeke Nusken was the star of the show the last time Chelsea faced Brighton & Hove Albion in the Women’s Super League, and the German midfielder would love to have a similar impact in the reverse fixture this evening.
Having joined the Blues from Eintracht Frankfurt last summer, the 23-year-old made an immediate impression with several eye-catching performances and has settled nicely into life at Chelsea.
And ahead of the trip to the Broadfield Stadium, Nusken caught up with us to discuss a strong start to the year on all fronts and what we can expect from Brighton, who will take confidence from a run of three consecutive victories themselves.
A hectic fixture schedule has seen us progress in the FA Cup and UEFA Women’s Champions League while maintaining our position at the top of the WSL table, and Nusken says the team is determined to keep up the good work.
‘We have done very well this last week,’ Nusken said. 'We won the games, we are on the top level and we want to continue like this.’
It was against Brighton in October that Nusken achieved a personal landmark, scoring her first career hat-trick in a 4-2 victory at Kingsmeadow. It is something she remains thoroughly delighted with.
‘It was a good game and a good day! Hopefully, we can do it again. It was amazing (to score a hat-trick). It was crazy and I didn’t expect it would happen, so I was very happy about it.'
We take on a Brighton side who have three straight wins under their belt and will go into this game looking to cause an upset.
Nusken and her Chelsea teammates know the threats Brighton possess and our number six expects another difficult encounter in the WSL.
‘It’s going to be a tough game, like every game in the Women’s Super League. We have to do our job and focus on our performance in order to get the win.’
