Sjoeke Nusken played her part in a thrilling Olympics quarter-final win for Germany, knocking out Chelsea duo Ashley Lawrence and Kadeisha Buchanan of Canada in the process.

The game in Marseille ended goalless and a penalty shoot-out was required to separate the two sides, with the Germans edging out on top and reaching the final four following a 4-2 win on penalties.

Lawrence saw her penalty for the defending champions stopped by former Chelsea goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger, before the Germany custodian then buried her spot-kick to send her side through to the semi-final where they will face USA.

Earlier on Saturday, penalties were also required by Spain as they defeated Mayra Ramirez’s Columbia.

The Chelsea striker was on target for Columbia, opening the scoring after just 12 minutes before they doubled their lead in Lyon just after the break.

However Spain hit back through Jenni Hermoso to halve the deficit before a penalty deep into stoppage time from Irene Paredes ensured the game would go to extra-time.

That additional passage of play couldn’t separate the two teams and in the end, Spain held their nerve to win 4-2 on penalties.

Elsewhere, Maika Hamano came on as a second-half substitute for Japan but she couldn’t help her side overcome the USA, with Emma Hayes’s side reaching the semi-final stage thanks to an extra-time winner from Trinity Rodman – daughter of NBA legend, Dennis - at the Parc de Princes.

Finally on Saturday, Sandy Baltimore was part of the France squad that were defeated on home soil by Brazil, with Gabi Porthilo firing home a winner for Brazil eight minutes from time.

France pushed for an equaliser, with 16 minutes of added time played, but the Brazilians held firm to reach the final four.

Eve Perisset, another Chelsea star, is part of the French squad for this home games but wasn’t included in this matchday group.
