Kenneth Omeruo played for the Nigeria side that lost their Africa Cup of Nations semi-final in agonising fashion.
A free-kick from Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez five minutes into stoppage time at the end of the game decided the match in favour of Algeria, 2-1 being the final score.William Troost-Ekong, a defender who plays at Udinese, scored an own-goal when he deflected in a Mahrez cross to give Algeria the lead late in the first half, but a penalty scored by former Watford striker Odion Ighalo on 72 minutes levelled the scores. The spot-kick had been awarded for handball. However with tie seemingly destined for extra-time, Mahrez found the top corner to send his nation through to the final. They will play Senegal with Nigeria left to face Tunisia in the third/fourth place play-off on Wednesday.Omeruo, who played in Spain on loan at Leganes last season, completed the full match. Former Chelsea players John Mikel Obi and Ola Aina were unused substitutes for Nigeria.
