With Chelsea visiting Elland Road this week to take on Leeds United in our last away game of the Premier League season this week, we take a look at some key results for the Blues on our final road trips of previous campaigns.
2017 – West Bromwich Albion
Chelsea only needed a win at the Hawthorns to clinch the Premier League title in 2016/17 but despite controlling possession, Antonio Conte’s side were frustrated by West Brom’s well organised defence as the match remained scoreless with only eight minutes left.
The frustration of the visiting fans continued when Gary Cahill miscued a volley and sliced it well wide but Cesar Azpilicueta reacted quickly to keep the ball alive on the right byline and centred it into the six-yard box for Michy Batshuayi to tap in the title-clinching goal.
2013 – Aston Villa
Frank Lampard made club history in a glorious come-from-behind victory at Villa Park which all but assured Chelsea of a top-four finish and a place in the Champions League the following season.
With the Blues trailing to a Christian Benteke goal, Super Frank levelled things up just after the hour when he fired home a glorious left-footed effort from the edge of the box to equal Bobby Tambling’s club record of 202 goals.
He then set a new mark with his 203rd goal in the 88th minute, bursting into the six-yard box to turn home Eden Hazard’s cross for the winning goal.
2010 – Liverpool
In a tight race for the title in 2009/10, the Blues travelled to Anfield holding a slender one-point lead over second-placed Manchester United and knowing that nothing less than a win against Liverpool would suffice if we were to remain in pole position.
The decisive moment came in the 33rd minute when a dreadful backpass by Reds captain Steven Gerrard in the 33rd minute was latched on by Didier Drogba who slid the ball past Pepe Reina for the opening goal.
Lampard then turned in a Nicolas Anelka cross nine minutes after the interval to seal a 2-0 victory which proved crucial as we hammered Wigan 8-0 at Stamford Bridge a week later to clinch the title.
2009 – Sunderland
Chelsea had already clinched third place when we visited the Stadium of Light on the final day of 2008/09 but it proved a special occasion for Nicolas Anelka as he became the third Chelsea player after Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Didier Drogba to win the Premier League Golden Boot award.
Tied with Cristiano Ronaldo on 18 goals at kick-off, the Frenchman moved up to 19 with a glorious effort after 47 minutes as he made a 50-yard solo run before unleashing a stunning right-footed drive into the top corner to open the scoring in a 3-2 victory.
