It is not often you see an outfielder have to take the goalkeeper gloves but that is exactly what John Terry did at Reading on Saturday 14 October 2006.
Our first league visit to the Madejski Stadium to play the newly-promoted Royals was a frenzied affair from the off. Inside a minute, Petr Cech suffered a serious head injury that threatened his life. Thankfully, after surgery on his skull, the goalkeeper was able to make a full recovery. He was back between our posts just a few months later.
Back to Berkshire, and Frank Lampard put us ahead with a deflected free-kick on the stroke of half-time. The battle continued in the second half as both sides were reduced to ten men, before Cudicini - who had replaced Cech early on - was knocked unconscious after being clattered into by Ibrahima Sonko while collecting a corner.
With a few minutes still to play, captain Terry took the shirt of third-choice keeper Hilario and headed between the posts as the nine-man Blues saw out a gritty 1-0 win. JT didn't have too much to do, thankfully, but you can see still him in action in this unfamiliar role below.
