Chelsea travelled to The Valley on 27 November 2004 and the performance and result that followed against Charlton Athletic proved another indicator of our title credentials that season.
Jose Mourinho’s Blues made the short journey to south-east London two points clear of nearest rivals Arsenal and with our most recent away games, 4-1 wins at West Brom and Fulham respectively, fresh in the mind.
Chelsea lined up in the customary 4-3-3 formation favoured by Mourinho that season and didn’t take long to get into our groove. Eidur Gudjohnsen dropped deep and played an incisive pass into the path of Damien Duff, who held off Paul Konchesky and finished neatly from a tight angle.
Ricardo Carvalho headed against his own bar but that was about as close as the Addicks came all afternoon. We put our foot down at the start of the second half and captain John Terry netted twice in three minutes to make sure the points would be heading back west.
Both goals stemmed from right-sided, inswinging Duff corners. Terry planted a header home from the first and then prodded in his second after Carvalho kept the ball alive.
Terry would end his glittering Chelsea career with 67 goals – and this was one of only two occasions he scored more than once in a game, the other coming against fellow capital outfit Fulham in April 2013.
Gudjohnsen added the cherry on top of the cake with a trademark dinked finish from Lampard’s bending through ball. The 4-0 scoreline did not flatter the Blues, who moved five points clear at the top of the table. Arsenal’s loss at Liverpool the following day ensured it was a lead we would not relinquish, going on to win our first Premier League title a few months later.
