General Manager Paul Green praised a ‘great start’ from Chelsea Women as we kicked-off our UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign with an impressive 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain on Thursday night.

Millie Bright’s first-half volley was enough to ensure the Blues bring maximum points back to London on matchday one. This victory sets the tone for the remainder of our European campaign which continues against Vllaznia at Kingsmeadow next Wednesday.

Chelsea created the better chances throughout the match and it was Bright who netted the decisive goal on 27 minutes, expertly volleying the ball home from Erin Cuthbert’s cross. With resilience and effective game-management, we protected our slender lead to seal a hugely important three points.

Reflecting on a positive all-round display, Green expressed his satisfaction at the performance against a quality opposition and commended the team for their application and commitment to achieving the right result.

‘We’re absolutely delighted to get a win away from home against a tough opponent like PSG and to keep a clean sheet is fantastic. I thought the players dug in really well tonight. I thought the first half we dominated and the second half we came under a bit of pressure. I felt we handled it well, we looked very solid in our defensive structure and to get a clean sheet sets us up nicely for the rest of the campaign.’

With a slender lead intact at the break, Green revealed the message to the players at half-time and that on another day, the scoreline could have been greater had we converted more of the chances being created.

‘Denise and I reiterated just to keep things going. I thought first half we were really aggressive in our play, winning the ball back we had good energy about us. We just encouraged them to keep that going into the second half. We knew we may come under pressure because obviously it’s a tough place to come and quite a hostile crowd.

‘I thought we limited them to few opportunities and if anything we had two or three good counter-attacking opportunities of our own in the second half that maybe, if we’d picked a better pass or a better finish, we might have added to our tally. Overall, we’re absolutely delighted to come away from home and get the win.’

There was individual praise for the goalscorer, Bright, with Green commending the defender not only for her defensive contributions, but also the striker’s finish which made all the difference in the French capital.

‘I thought she was really good tonight. It was a great finish. She used to be a striker as a young player when we were both at Doncaster together. She must have been remembering that time when it came to her at the back post but it was a fantastic finish.

'Her overall performance as part of that defensive unit was really solid. She’s a top player and she certainly put in a top performance tonight.’

Having made a dream start to the group phase, Green believes this result can inspire confidence for the upcoming games but was quick to emphasise the need for consistency as we look to progress further into the competition.

‘I think it proves that we can come anywhere, perform and get a good result. To come away from home against PSG and get a 1-0 win is a fantastic result for us. It’ll give us confidence going into the rest of the campaign and maybe it starts to bury some of the demons from last year. At the end of the day, we need to show we are good enough across the whole group.

‘This is a fantastic start but we have to carry that through the remaining games and make sure we accumulate the number of points we need to get out the group. Last year, we fell just short in the final game and maybe dropping points at home was the reason that we did go out ultimately.

‘It was a very tough group, like it is this time, but we’ve made a great start tonight and we’ve got to try and build on that. We do want to go deep into the competition and we make no bones about that.’
