Pedro Neto has called on the Blues to show focus and concentration against Benfica to cut out the errors that have cost us points in recent weeks.
The winger was speaking ahead of tomorrow’s UEFA Champions League tie at Stamford Bridge, which sees us host the Portuguese side in what is our first home game in Europe’s top club competition since April 2023.
The fixture comes on the back of a difficult spell for the Blues; a late equaliser denied us victory at Brentford before red cards in back-to-back Premier League fixtures against Manchester United and Brighton & Hove Albion contributed to defeats
However, our Portuguese international insists those results haven't dampened the mood in the squad, instead leaving them determined to eliminate the dips in concentration which have prevented us from getting the results our performances deserve.
‘The vibe around the club is really positive,’ explained Neto. ‘The feeling of everyone is that a lot of the points we lost were because we made our own mistakes.
‘In the last game [against Brighton], you could see that we were controlling most of the game, and we’re not blaming anyone, but everyone knows our own mistakes have been taking points from us.
‘We know the quality that we have and the control we have been having of the games. Even at Brentford away, we were winning until the last minute and we conceded a goal because our focus was not 100 per cent.
‘It is something that has to come from us as a team. We have to go into the game even more focused. In the Premier League and the Champions League, you cannot rest for one second, because you can concede in one second if you give away presents. So it is something we have to learn.
‘We are on the pitch, we have to take the blame as well. We have to do much better and as a team we need to focus on ourselves and learn from our mistakes for the next game.
‘So the feeling is really positive, the players are really positive. Tomorrow we have an opportunity to show what we can do one more time and we go with everything to win the game.’
The 25-year-old believes the Blues have demonstrated the level we are capable of achieving under Enzo Maresca in our impressive conclusion to last season and victory at the summer’s FIFA Club World Cup, during which we defeated Benfica in the last 16.
In his opinion, if we can put an end to the errors, we are capable of matching and surpassing those high standards during the current campaign.
‘It did take a while, as normal for every team when you have a new manager to be solid on the performance and the ideas that the manager has.
‘But I think as we showed last year, we brought a lot of his ideas and we were really fast because we were second for a long time, then we had a bad moment like everyone does.
‘As we showed last year, we were really fast to get solid on the manager’s ideas and we did really well and are doing well again. It’s just missing this key part of not making mistakes. For sure, things will go back to us doing well again.
‘To be honest, I want to do better. As a team, we want to do much better as well. The standards we put up are really high and I think we have been doing that, we have been playing well, we have been doing a lot of good stuff. It comes from our own mistakes and that is what we have to improve.
‘Last season we showed what we can do, we showed at the Club World Cup what we can do, and that is what we are going to do this season, we will show what we can do and we will do great stuff.’
