Pedro Neto has discussed his pride at following in the footsteps of some of the Portugal legends to have represented the country at the FIFA World Cup, including their current captain Cristiano Ronaldo.
Neto and Ronaldo are both part of the Portugal squad currently competing in North America at the 2026 World Cup, the latter scoring twice as they beat Uzbekistan 5-0 in their second game, recovering strongly from an opening 1-1 draw with DR Congo, when the Chelsea winger had set up Joao Neves for the first goal.
For Neto, it is an honour to be following in the footsteps of some of his Portugal heroes from past tournaments by representing his nation at the World Cup, especially as a team-mate of one of them, in Ronaldo.
‘A guy that I normally used to watch on television, now I’m part of his changing room,’ enthused Neto.
‘It's like a dream come true and a proud moment as well to play alongside, in my opinion, the best-ever player.
‘Cristiano Ronaldo, [Luis] Figo, [Ricardo] Quaresma, Pepe – I had the opportunity to play with some of them, so I'm really proud of it.
‘Like I always say, when I was a child, I always looked up to these players playing for Portugal and I dreamed about it.’
Portugal next face already-qualified Colombia in their final group game in the early hours of Sunday morning UK time, knowing a win would send them through as Group K winners.
