Chelsea winger Pedro Neto's World Cup journey has come to an end after a stoppage-time goal from Mikel Merino saw Portugal eliminated by Spain in the Round of 16.

As has been the case throughout the tournament in North America, Neto was included in his country's starting XI. He was deployed on the right of a Portugal attack that also included former Blue Joao Felix, Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The opening 45 minutes were cagey, with few chances created. Mikel Oyarzabal had Spain's best when he was put through on goal but dragged a shot wide from 18 yards. At the other end, Portugal rattled the crossbar through a deflected effort from Nuno Mendes.

Spain took greater control of the game in the second period and Portugal became more limited in the final third, although Neto helped Roberto Martinez's side threaten on the counter. One powerful run forward from the 26-year-old ended with a dangerous cross that wasn't turned home.

In the 83rd minute, Neto was replaced by Francisco Conceicao. Two minutes later, Merino was introduced for Spain in place of Dani Olmo. It proved a pivotal change.

Six minutes of stoppage time were added. In the first, Merino took a quick free-kick, moved forward and received a pass back from Ferran Torres that he finished expertly from 12 yards to seal a 1-0 win for Spain that sees them advance into the last eight.
