Cole Palmer’s accuracy from the spot has already seen him match Jorginho’s best and he is now closing in on Frank Lampard’s club record.

Our young forward’s impressive first season at Stamford Bridge, since an August move from Manchester City, has seen him manage 34 goal involvements already, with 21 goals and 13 assists for Chelsea across all competitions so far in 2023/24.

Of those, 16 goals have come in the Premier League, with half of his strikes in that competition arriving via the penalty spot.

Numbers seven and eight from 12 yards came in last week’s dramatic 4-3 win over Manchester United, contributing to Cole’s first Chelsea hat-trick and an incredible injury-time turnaround to come back from 3-2 down to take all three points.

That penalty double took Palmer past Jorginho’s highest tally of seven Premier League goals from the spot for Chelsea in 2020/21, which actually made the Italian international our top scorer in the competition that year.

Only one player has ever scored more Premier League penalties in a single season than Palmer. That, of course, is Frank Lampard, who netted 10 times from the spot in 2009/10. Will Cole get the chance to close in on the Blues legend’s club record in the final two months of 2023/24?

Whatever the answer to that question, Palmer still has a long way to go to match Lampard’s overall record of 41 Premier League penalties scored, although he is already sixth on our list of all-time penalty scorers in the competition and, at 21 years of age, he has time on his side.

One area Palmer can boast a superior penalty record to Frank is in his 100 per cent success rate from the spot, having found the net with all eight efforts. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s 12 goals from 12 penalties makes the famous Dutch striker the only Blues player to have scored more from the spot without missing in the Premier League.

In fact, so good is Palmer’s penalty record this season that he has actually scored more Premier League goals from the spot than 18 of the 20 top-flight clubs’ entire teams, the only exceptions being Chelsea and Arsenal.

Of course, he is helped in that by Chelsea having – and scoring – more penalties than any other side in the English first tier this season. In total we have been awarded 11, one more than Arsenal – in addition to Palmer’s eight goals, Noni Madueke has scored one, while Enzo Fernandez netted once but saw another saved by West Ham United keeper Alphonse Areola.

However, it is Palmer who has been the man of the moment from the spot in recent weeks. ‘I’ve had a few penalties this season and when they’re in front of me, I just want to continue to try and score them. I want to keep my focus and strike the ball clean,’ said Cole, after his two penalties against Man Utd contributed to his run of eight goals in four games, prior to Sunday's draw at Sheffield United.

Everton be warned. Any wayward challenges in the box when we meet in the Blues' next match on Monday evening, and Palmer is ready to punish you from the penalty spot.
