Chelsea Under-21s head coach Mark Robinson hopes his side can take the positives from recent good performances and combine them with the lessons learned from our first league defeat of 2024 when we travel to Newcastle United for a match you can watch live on the Official Chelsea App.

The Blues have been in impressive form since the turn of the year but were beaten last time out. A 4-2 defeat to Arsenal in an exciting, end-to-end encounter, represented our first dropped points in the Premier League 2 in 2024 following a run of five consecutive wins.

Our Under-21s will be hoping to get straight back to winning ways in our next Premier League 2 fixture away at Newcastle United on Friday 8 March. That match kicks off at 7pm and will be streamed live on the Official Chelsea App.

Robinson is keen to ward against an overreaction as we hope to bounce back, though, pointing out there have been plenty of good points to our performance in recent weeks, which must be retained.

'We’ve reflected honestly after Arsenal, looked at the positives, and looked at where we think the game got away from us,' said Robinson. 'Now we’re not so much looking for a reaction, just more showing of that continued development into the next game.

'Results always matter, but what’s key is that if you just look at the result it can also hide an awful lot of positives, because football’s such an emotional game, and there were a lot of positives against Arsenal.

'It was quite an open game in the first half but our attacking play was exciting, fluent and imaginative, which was really good. Their goalkeeper had a great game, our finishing was a little bit substandard. We could have gone in at half-time two goals to the good and then we would be talking very differently.

'We had 60 per cent possession and without doubt the better clear chances. That resulted in them coming out for the second half sitting in a mid-block, which I told the boys was a massive show of respect for us, making Arsenal change tactics, which is unusual for them.'

As it was, we went in for the break at 1-1 and failed to recover when the Gunners took the lead in the second half. That means just as he knows which parts of the performance we need to keep, Robinson is also aware of where improvement is needed.

While we need to avoid a knee-jerk reaction to the defeat itself, Robinson is looking for a better on-pitch response to any similar setbacks during future matches.

'We were still attacking well in the first 10 minutes of the second half, but unfortunately their second goal did seem to knock the wind out of our sails and that’s what we focused on, and the reasons why.

'The players were quite clear on why they thought that happened and then we talked about why that can’t happen, but we also have to take into account it was our fifth game in 16 days as well.

'So we have to look at that and recognise what happened, because I still felt at 2-1 if we’d shown a different kind of response we could have got ourselves back into the game.

'It’s that element we’re looking for because football’s not perfect. You can play really well and find yourself not winning. With young players it’s about learning not to get disappointed and believing you can get yourself back into a game.'

As Robinson alluded, it has been a busy period for our Under-21s, with a series of big fixtures in quick succession and now a long away trip to Newcastle for our next Premier League 2 match. Yet he is looking at the positives.

'Although it was a busy schedule I think that was really important for the boys. I was really proud that they came out of that busy schedule with five wins. It’s important not to focus on the schedule too much because a lot of the time the tiredness can be mental more than physical.

'So you look at it as a positive challenge rather than a hurdle. We’ve got another long journey, but it’s just part and parcel of being a footballer and I fully expect us to go up there and get a result.'
