Chelsea will face Benfica in the Club World Cup round of 16 on Saturday and the two European giants are clubs which have seen several players move between them over the years, with a number of them going on to achieve great success in blue.
Enzo Fernandez is the latest player to join Chelsea from Benfica, with the midfielder becoming a blue in the January 2023 transfer window, just six weeks after lifting the World Cup with Argentina.
The 24-year-old has been a key member of the Chelsea squad, often captaining the team in the absence of Reece James during the 2024/25 campaign, when we secured Champions League qualification and the UEFA Conference League.
Our business with Benfica has often proved beneficial for both clubs. David Luiz joined us from the Portuguese club in January 2011 and after winning the Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup in his first spell, returned in August 2016 after two years with PSG, going on to win the Premier League, another Europa League and an additional FA Cup in blue.
Another player who enjoyed two spells with us and picked up his fair share of trophies was Nemanja Matic. The midfielder joined Chelsea as a 21-year-old and after being here for our Double win in 2009/10 and having a loan spell at Vitesse, joined the Eagles for a successful three years.
Matic would return to Chelsea from Benfica and went on to win the Premier League twice, FA Cup and League Cup during his second stint with us.
One man who won it all with us also came from Benfica, midfielder Ramires.
Rami earned legendary status thanks to his spectacular efforts against Manchester City and Barcelona, which bagged him back-to-back Goal of the Season awards.
The Brazilian lifted every major domestic and European honour during his five-and-a-half years at the Bridge, making 251 appearances along the way.
Going further back, another player who won the title in blue following a move from Benfica was Tiago Mendes, who may have only been with us for a season but made 52 appearances in all competitions as we secured a maiden Premier League crown.
One player who went in the opposite direction was Scott Minto. The left-back spent three years with us after joining from Charlton Athletic and was part of the FA Cup-winning team of 1997.
That summer he joined Benfica and experienced playing Champions League football for the first time before returning to London with West Ham 18 months later.
There have been a host of other players who have featured for both clubs during their careers, including Joao Felix, Diego Moreira, Eduardo Carvalho, Maniche and Emerson Thome.
