Mauricio Pochettino felt we lost out to Everton for two main reasons, a lack of aggression in the final third and a loss of concentration around our own box.

Mauricio Pochettino saw his Chelsea side suffer the second of back-to-back away defeats in the North-West on Sunday afternoon, as we succumbed to a 2-0 loss at Everton in the Premier League.

A match of very few chances was settled at the beginning and end of the second half, when Abdoulaye Doucoure gave the home side the lead and Lewis Dobbin made it safe in added time.

However, it was our own lack of impact in the final third which Pochettino chose to focus on when considering what went wrong at Goodison Park.

'We didn’t score,' he stated simply. 'I think we dominated the game, we were the better side, but if you don’t score goals it is difficult to win the games. We were not aggressive enough in the last third.

'We have been showing promise with it, but today we showed a lack of positivity. We had too many approaches into the last third but then if you are not aggressive enough or compete with quality there it is difficult to win the game. In the end, a lack of concentration and we concede one goal, but we should have scored before.

'We need to score if we want to win the game and be in a different position in the table. It’s not only about playing well, because the team did play well, dominated the game, against a very difficult team like Everton.

'I think we deserved full credit because we were much better than them, but in the end you need to score, because if not you build the confidence of the opponent. Then it’s impossible to play 97 minutes and not make a mistake.'

Pochettino did point out, though, that there is no magic bullet for fixing a team's form in one move...

'It’s not as easy to say that is the problem, it is not only one. It is holistic, like football is 11 players on the pitch that need to perform, and there are ideas, philosophy and mentality. The problem is why we arrive in this situation. We are dealing with that, we know why, but it’s difficult to explain.

'Today I think it’s different to after Newcastle or Manchester United. Today I think we were better than Everton and we feel disappointed and maybe frustrated because we weren’t clinical in front of goal and we didn’t create more chances than we did.

'We need to be more aggressive. It’s not only to dominate and play well, it is to compete better. But also we cannot show this lack of concentration and concede the first goal we did. But I think we were punished too much today.'

He also felt this could be a wake up call for his players about the need to fight for every point...

'Before talking about the system, before talking about performance, what happens is little by little to change the mentality, to fight the expectation of reality. We need to fight, the expectation at Chelsea is massive, always to win the Premier League. But of course after that is reality and the team is still fighting through circumstances.

'Sometimes it is good to have a reality check that we need to fight. If we want to win we need to be more aggressive in our behaviour, in our way to perform. We are not going to win games because we are Chelsea, or because we play well and deserve to win.

'That is our reality now, mid-table, and if we want to move up it’s not only about playing well, it’s about being tougher with ourselves. We are going to push and the players need to push themselves also.'
