Cole Palmer’s recent displays have been a highlight of Chelsea’s season so far. Ahead of our return to action at Newcastle today, Mauricio Pochettino has discussed the methods required to keep the youngster performing at his best.
Palmer has already provided four goals and four assists in all competitions this season, those impressive figures recorded in just 757 minutes of football across 11 appearances.
But Pochettino knows getting to the top is one thing, and staying there is an entirely separate challenge. It is one he and the rest of his coaching staff are ready to tackle head on.
‘We were talking in the last few weeks about how we are going to keep our players at their best,’ said Pochettino.
‘It’s about pushing them every day to be outside their comfort zone. After performing well in a few games, sometimes, because you’re a human being, you find this comfort zone and that makes you go down.
‘It is our responsibility now to push him every day into an uncomfortable zone, to keep improving, keep improving, keep improving. We will keep pushing him and all the players to give their best.’
One member of Pochettino’s squad whose effort levels never drop below 100 per cent is Conor Gallagher.
Like Palmer, Gallagher has been one of the stars of our season so far. As one of only two outfielders to start every league game, his worth to Pochettino is clear, too.
'He is always a player who speaks on the pitch or in training,’ Pochettino revealed.
‘He is very professional. He is not a player who will complain – if he is not performing – about his position, the style, or the philosophy.
‘He is a player that is not autocratic, and he will always give his best to the team. It is why he is performing and a really important player for us now.’
