Ahead of tomorrow’s Premier League match against Sheffield United, Mauricio Pochettino has discussed the importance of his team’s growing bond with the Chelsea supporters and the consequences of Cole Palmer striking fear into opposition defences.
Chelsea and Cole Palmer go into our next Premier League fixture on a high after our dramatic victory over Manchester United on Thursday evening, when two late, late goals from our No20 completed his first hat-trick for the Blues and an incredible comeback victory.
That sparked scenes of wild celebration on the pitch and in the stands on a night to remember at Stamford Bridge, and Mauricio Pochettino believes the importance of the relationship between team and supporters created by moments like that cannot be overestimated.
‘Always, before you talk about the pitch or tactics, the most important thing is that you go to the games with a good energy and connection,’ explained Pochettino.
‘The fans are so important in football and it was my first time at Stamford Bridge that I started to feel the connection with the fans, and of the team with the fans.
‘That is going to be helpful for us until the end of the season and will be really important.’
Of course, those celebrations were sparked by another excellent performance by Palmer in his debut season with the Blues, following his summer move from United’s local rivals Manchester City.
Pochettino feels Cole is benefitting from arriving without the weight of as much expectation as some of his team-mates, although people are certainly paying attention to the Premier League Player of the Month nominee’s form now, as shown by some rough treatment from defenders in recent weeks.
‘It’s normal,’ said Mauricio. ‘If I play against Cole Palmer, I am going to tell my defensive line to be tough and not give him the chance to get the ball. That is going to be normal.
‘Sometimes expectations play a very important role on a player when they are young. When we signed Palmer, nobody expected him to perform in the way he is performing, but maybe if we paid more, people put pressure on a guy who is young like him.
‘For sure, we have talented players who need time. All are in a different level with expectation, pressure and everything, but we have a young team that needs to grow.
‘This process is painful because when we don’t win, it’s tough and difficult for everyone and our fans. We know what we are doing but the process is not as fast as everyone expected.’
Hopefully, the late win over Man Utd can help accelerate that process for Chelsea, beginning with another Premier League victory at Bramall Lane tomorrow afternoon.
