Mauricio Pochettino is excited to take on Middlesbrough later this evening in what he believes is the ‘biggest game of the season’ so far, as we look to secure our place in the final of the Carabao Cup by overturning a one-goal deficit.

The Chelsea boss has been eagerly anticipating the final-four tie following the extended winter break, hopeful of a positive performance at Stamford Bridge.

But Pochettino is also aware of the importance of the match in guiding the rest of the campaign and has reiterated the need to respect Middlesbrough, who already hold the advantage going into the second leg.

‘Tomorrow is the biggest game of the season because it’s our access to the final,’ Pochettino began.

‘We need to be convincing to be able to win. It’s the possibility to play in and win a final. It’s a good pressure. I like this type of challenge. We want to be in that situation and play in semi-finals.

‘I think the game tomorrow is really important because it’s the possibility to win a trophy. In a personal way, I’m so excited for the game. It’s a way to play at Wembley, a final, and to have the possibility to win a title. I’m so motivated and I try to translate to the players how good it is to play a final and to play in Wembley.

‘Some players have that experience of playing in finals and we need to use that experience to translate to the younger players that maybe still haven’t had the opportunity. We need to deserve it and we need to believe.’

Focusing on the opposition, Pochettino believes that the first leg has given the Blues a valuable taste of what to expect from the Championship side, with Boro more than capable of stunting Chelsea’s progress.

‘The dream is to be better than Middlesbrough,’ he said. ‘We can’t just dream of winning a trophy and don’t pay attention to Middlesbrough – we need to be better and we need to match them in energy. That’s the most important thing.

‘We are going to face a team that is going to fight, that is going to be strong and have some players that can put ourselves in some problems.

‘We need to concentrate and give our best today. We have spoken a lot in this period, we are ready and now we need to show that we deserve to be in the final.’

The boss is expecting a special atmosphere at the Bridge, with Pochettino hopeful that the Blues can put on a show for the home supporters in attendance and the millions watching around the world.

He added: ‘Today our fans will be really motivated to help our team reach the final. We need to show from the first signal that we care and we want to go to the final.

‘It’s about our attitude and commitment, and being ready to fight. For sure, if the fans see this energy from the team, then they will be behind us.’
