In the next instalment of our preview series looking ahead to the new campaign, club historian Rick Glanvill details which changes to the laws of the game the Premier League have adopted for 2026/27…

As already witnessed at the World Cup, players must leave the field for one minute after receiving treatment, up from the previous 30 seconds.

No more than five seconds must elapse before the taking of a goal-kick or throw-in, with possession awarded to the other team should this not be adhered to.

Substitutes are now permitted just ten seconds to leave the field of play at the nearest point. Failure to do so will result in the replacement player being delayed until the next stoppage after one minute has passed.

The VAR system can now review incidents where second yellow cards have led to a red card.

The Premier League has decided against allowing VAR staff to overturn incorrectly-awarded corners.

In the Carabao Cup, a player moving during the winter transfer window may not play for one club in the first leg of the semi-final and another in the second, but may represent their new club in the final.

Loan players no longer need written permission from their parent club in order to play in the competition.
