Filipe Coelho, the head coach of our Under-21s team, shared his thoughts on our most recent Premier League 2 match, when we secured our first win of the 2024/25 season against Middlesbrough.

Last Sunday, the Blues travelled to Middlesbrough for our first away fixture of the new campaign and delivered a dominant performance, winning 3-1.

Our side delivered an exciting end-to-end display, applying relentless pressure throughout the match and creating numerous goal-scoring opportunities. Jimmy-Jay Morgan shone with a brilliant hat-trick, assisted twice by Tyrique George and once by Ishe Samuels-Smith.

Our Portuguese coach expressed his enthusiasm for the team's performance, noting that the victory has boosted our confidence as we head into the international break.

'I think it was a very good performance from our part,' smiled Coelho. 'Regarding what we were searching for in this match, in terms of consistency in our offensive behaviours, we were very good.

'It was similar to the last match against Everton, in terms of the chances created and the way we reached the last third. However, this time we converted those chances into goals. I'm very pleased with the opportunities we created and the threat we imposed on our opponents.

'It’s about focusing on the details now - working on crossing situations, crossing agreements and the precision of our passes. Simple things can increase our score.

'I felt that we dominated the match so much that, at half-time, we should have had a more comfortable result. But the boys gave their all throughout the match and I was pleased overall.'

One aspect that Coelho has consistently emphasised is the mentality he wants his players to uphold, by being brave and bold. In our previous outing, he believes he saw his team develop not only as individuals but also as a connected unit.

'I'm seeing that mentality appearing in every player. The team’s connection shows that we are on a path to achieve even more good things in the future. You can see the connection on the pitch as well.

'Tyrique connects really well with Jimmy-Jay, and their bond on the field was evident in the two goals we scored. The bond between our wide areas, such as with Josh [Acheampong] and Ato [Ampah], was very good. Although I can highlight individuals, it was a collective effort.

'Our defence delivered a strong performance and impressed me with their excellent communication. They managed situations well and made smart decisions.

'The connection and movements we promoted in those areas were very good and special. As I’ve said before, we play as a team, not as individuals.'

The 39-year-old passionately described our performance against Boro, highlighting that his players now truly understand the mentality and characteristics required when wearing the Blue shirt.

'We are Chelsea, we should be ruthless every single game. As a strong and impressive club, we shouldn’t give any side a chance to come back.

'For example, in this fixture, just like in the Everton game, we had many opportunities and need to ensure we convert those chances into goals. We must uphold our standards and capitalise on every opportunity.

'However, the positives are clear. We are showing everyone that our process is consistent and effective. We are seeing a team that is developing and gaining more confidence with each fixture. It's a great thing to see.'

Coelho was pleased with the team's performance in our first away fixture, but is already looking ahead, as we prepare to kick off our Premier League Cup campaign against Brentford at Kingsmeadow.

'We can improve because there's always room for growth. Although we performed well in the wide areas, our strikers need to be in the right positions to capitalise on the opportunities their team-mates create. We must convert our chances.

'Even in the first two matches that we didn’t win, the players understood that we are on the right path.

'The boost of confidence comes with goals and victories. It’s important to keep things simple, maintain our approach and continue passing a good message to the team, so we can be more effective in the future.'
