Chelsea Under-21s are hoping to prolong the season as long as possible in pursuit of silverware, starting with Friday’s Premier League Cup semi-final, which will be streamed live on the Official Chelsea App.

The next couple of days could me massive for Chelsea as a club, with four different teams all on the trophy hunt, including three semi-finals in less than 24 hours. On Saturday, our men are at Wembley in the FA Cup, while the Women travel to Barcelona in the Champions League and the Under-18s have a big game in the title race.

It all kicks off at 7pm on Friday evening, though, when our Under-21s host Fulham at Kingsmeadow in the semi-finals of the Premier League Cup. You can watch the game live on the Official Chelsea App.

With the Blues also guaranteed a spot in the end-of-season Premier League 2 play-offs, Under-21s head coach Mark Robinson is hoping knockout victories in an exciting finish to the campaign can extend our season into May, as we hunt trophies on two fronts, starting by booking a place in the Premier League Cup final.

‘It’s a key point in the season and you want the boys to experience as many games as possible,’ said Robinson.

‘We’re at that stage now where we’ve got the semi-final on Friday, then Southampton in the last league game, then we’re guaranteed at least one more game in the last 16 of the PL2 play-offs. So it could be three games until the end of the season, or it could be seven.

‘Obviously we want to do everything we can to make sure it’s seven, because that’s more development and game time for the boys, and of course it means we could win something as well, which is obviously the aim.

‘We’re really looking forward to it and it would be great if we can get a good crowd down at Kingsmeadow to cheer the lads on. Hopefully we can start two days of good semi-finals for the club, with the FA Cup and Women’s Champions League on Saturday.’

If our Under-21s are to secure victory, they will need to do so without several regular members of the team. Robinson revealed his side is in the middle of an injury crisis at the moment, but he chooses to focus on the opportunity that will provide for some of our younger Academy players to step up in a semi-final.

‘Unfortunately we’ve hit a bit of a difficult time with injuries recently and it looks like we’ll be without five players. So we’re going to have to change a little bit, which will give more opportunities to Under-18s.

‘But it’s a positive that we’ve been a young team this year, and we’ll probably be even younger on Friday. Although it’s really disappointing for those players who are going to miss out on this game, it’s a great opportunity for others to add to their development.’

He knows the whole team will need to be ready for the occasion and perform at their highest level if the Blues are to secure victory and a place in the final, as Fulham are currently third in the Premier League 2 table after winning four of their last five matches, and already proved themselves tough opposition in a 2-2 draw at Kingsmeadow in November.

‘Fulham are in really good form. They’ll have more experience than us but we were really pleased with the performance in the league game against them.

‘Obviously that involved a few of the boys who are going to be missing, but we were pleased with the performance on the whole, just disappointed we gave away the lead to an injury-time equaliser.

‘So we know we’ll have to be at our absolute best to get the result we want.’
