You see it every time you look at a Blues shirt, but do you know the significance of the rose that appears on the club crest, which is now an exclusive piece of Chelsea-themed jewellery?
Chelsea Women’s official jewellery partner, D.LOUISE, launched their collaboration with the Blues by producing a special range, named the Chelsea Rose Collection, which celebrates that element of the badge adorned on our shirts for every game and on display across Stamford Bridge.
As well as a tasteful and subtle nod to our history, it's a choice that brings an air of mystery to the range. After all, the exact origins of that element of the club crest has been lost to time, although its prominence throughout our history is clear.
The rose first appeared in relation to Chelsea when we launched our new club badge back in 1953, which then began to appear on our shirts seven years later. It was a bold design inspired by the great Ted Drake, the managerial mastermind behind our first-ever top-flight league title in 1955.
The colours of the rose on the majority of our club crest’s iterations over the years are a nod to the Tudor Rose, a classic symbol of English unity, combining the two opposing sides of the 15th Century civil war. The victorious Tudors had several links with the Borough of Chelsea, on which we styled several other elements of the badge.
However, there is a far more literal link. Tudor Rose was also the name of a boys’ club in Queen’s Park whose four Under-18 football teams were adopted by the Blues in 1947. They played the role of our first-ever youth system and trials were hosted for prospective young talents.
Whatever the exact origins of the rose on the Chelsea crest, it has been part of the club for 75 years, and is proudly worn on the chest of every player since it was reintroduced to the badge in 2004. It places it front and centre in many of the club’s most historic moments.
Now, it is also being worn around the necks and wrists of supporters everywhere, in sparkling jewellery form. The choice of the Chelsea Rose as the centrepiece of D.LOUISE’s link-up with Chelsea Women is a discreet nod to that heritage and tradition, allowing the wearer to display their footballing allegiance, but only to those in the know.
Bringing that heritage right up to date, the jewellery features a crown of exactly eight roses, one for each of our record eight Women’s Super League triumphs. History, tradition and modern-day triumphs - it really does represent everything there is to be proud of at Chelsea
With bracelets, necklaces and earrings in the range, and Christmas on the horizon, what better gift for the Blues-supporting loved one in your life, than to give them their very own piece of that Chelsea heritage?
