Christian Pulisic has labelled his recent injury issues as ‘the toughest hurdle in my career so far’ but believes he has come out the other side with more perspective and patience.
The American made 34 appearances in the pandemic-hit 2019/20 campaign, suffering an adductor issue at the turn of the year that left him limited throughout the first UK lockdown, before tearing his hamstring soon after a return in the delayed FA Cup final.
Those problems and his urgency to get back on the field as quickly as possible left him impatient and possibly pushing too hard, as he revealed in our latest Like A Pro video interview, which you can watch in full above.
‘The one that was really tough was just before the lockdown,’ he admitted of those recent injuries. ‘During that time, patience was also just really important.
'I told myself “by this game I need to be back playing” and when I had that in my head, where I need to be back by this moment, it wasn’t giving me the right clarity and mindset to really just make sure and get myself 100 per cent right.
‘I learned a lot about myself in that way, just finding the right time, knowing that the time will come, and it all worked out and happened for a reason.’
During the interview, Pulisic also revealed why golfing great Tiger Woods was his sporting idol growing up and reflected on being able to adapt when things haven’t gone exactly as he expected in his career and life.
‘My biggest athlete inspiration was actually Tiger Woods growing up,’ added Pulisic. ‘I just loved his mentality and felt he worked so hard to be as good as he was.
‘My biggest takeaway, especially recently, is maybe things aren’t going to go in exactly the way or the plan you had hoped for but I think that everything happens for a reason,’ he continued.
‘I really do trust that and believe in that, to just make the best out of every situation. That’s what I’ve tried to do; instead of complaining or making excuses, it’s just making the best out of the situation that you’re in.’
