Christian Pulisic and the USA national team had to settle for a point in their World Cup opener against Wales but the Chelsea forward reflected afterwards on plenty of positives from his tournament debut.

It was the 24-year-old who set up Timothy Weah’s breakthrough goal nine minutes before the interval with a clever threaded pass forward as the Americans enjoyed complete control of first-half proceedings.

However, Rob Page made a tactical tweak for the second period and the Welsh were much improved, earning their late equaliser as Gareth Bale converted from the spot to secure a 1-1 draw.

It was the USA’s first World Cup point since the 2014 group stage and Pulisic chose to focus on the pleasing aspects of their display.

‘There are a lot of positives from the game in general,’ he said shortly after the final whistle.

‘The team looks good and now we have to figure out how to put that together for 90 minutes. A point in the first game is better than none. We have to move on and learn from this.’

The USA take on England next in Group B, the Three Lions buoyed by an impressive 6-2 victory over Iran that featured a goal and assist from Pulisic’s Chelsea team-mate Raheem Sterling.

While the Stars and Stripes skipper knows that Friday's meeting will be a difficult challenge, he believes his team-mates have enough quality to trouble Gareth Southgate’s men and take a step closer to qualifying for the last-16.

‘I think we have a good enough team to make it out of this group,’ added Pulisic. ‘England is our next test and we’re going to go in, be aggressive and try to win the game.

‘I want to win. I’m very competitive and I love this team so much. I’m honoured to play in the World Cup for my country so the least I can do is give it everything I have.'
