Blues captain Reece James has already spoken with incoming Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso and says he is excited to work under the Spaniard at Stamford Bridge.

Alonso will begin his role as Chelsea manager on July 1 after signing a four-year contract with the Blues. He will work with a squad that contains several players at this summer's World Cup, including our homegrown skipper.

James is aiming to help England lift the World Cup for the first time in 60 years and started the Three Lions' opener against Croatia, which ended in a 4-2 victory.

When the 26-year-old returns for pre-season, he will then be greeted by a new manager in Alonso.

‘We’ve spoken a couple of times on the phone, but I've not met him in person yet,' explained James ahead of England's group game against Ghana.

‘Everyone I have spoken to about him says he is an amazing manager. I know him from his playing career – he had an amazing playing career – and I’m excited to work with him.’

James, who signed a new six-year contract in March, has developed into a leader on and off the pitch at Chelsea. Those qualities have also been taken into the England camp.

He has earned 25 caps for his country and is an experienced member of Thomas Tuchel's squad. It's a role that James is comfortable in.

‘The team has changed a lot,’ he said. ‘In previous years, there were a lot of experienced, older players. Now there is a new generation here and I try to share my experiences with the younger players who’ve not experienced this before or been around [the squad].'

England face Ghana this evening after an impressive performance saw the Three Lions beat Croatia 4-2 in their opening Group L match last Wednesday.

‘Everyone buys in and wants the same goal,' he added. 'Being on the same page helps. It’s tournament football and anything can happen, so we need to be ready for every moment.’
