A late goal from Mason Burstow secured a 1-1 draw for Chelsea against Borussia Dortmund in Chicago – and ensured we return from our pre-season tour of the USA unbeaten.

An unbeaten tour

There was a strong look to the starting XI named by Mauricio Pochettino. Reece James captained the side and was part of a back four that included Thiago Silva, Levi Colwill and Ben Chilwell.

Enzo Fernandez and Conor Gallagher were deployed in a double pivot. Raheem Sterling, Carney Chukwuemeka and Christopher Nkunku were used behind Nicolas Jackson.

The aim was to sign off our tour of the USA in style – and the Blues were the dominant side during the opening 45 minutes on a tricky pitch.

Several chances were created. The first fell to Jackson. He twice exchanged passes with Nkunku to advance Chelsea into the Dortmund penalty area and then fired powerfully toward goal. Unfortunately, goalkeeper Alexander Meyer blocked the shot.

Colwill, whose new six-year contract was announced earlier in the day, then had a huge opportunity to open the scoring. But from close range, the academy graduate was unable to keep down a corner delivered by Chilwell and flicked on by Silva.

There was reason for concern midway through the first half as Nkunku dropped to the turf and clutched his knee. There was no risks taken as the Frenchman was replaced by Mykhailo Mudryk.

The intensity of the contest did drop after the substitution. Yet Chelsea continued to fashion chances. Chilwell had a shot from an acute angle saved by Meyer and Sterling flashed an effort across goal and wide after a deft Fernandez pass.

Shortly before the interval, Silva produced a perfectly-timed pass forward for Jackson, who was able to round Meyer just outside the penalty area. The Chelsea striker couldn't keep his shot down, however.

Pochettino opted against any half-time changes – an indication the end of pre-season is near – and soon after the restart Chukwuemeka was teed up with a chance in the box by Jackson. But his shot was blocked on its route to goal.

Mudryk looked sharp once again during his time on the Soldier Field pitch and he whipped a shot from distance narrowly wide after short Chilwell corner. When changes were made by Pochettino on the 70-minute mark, Dortmund had not registered a shot on target.

However, the Bundesliga side's first effort on goal resulted in them taking the lead. The ball was driven back into the Chelsea penalty area and Marius Wolf was deemed to be onside and swept home from close range.

Wolf threatened goal again soon after; Kepa this time was able to get down and push wide the attempt from the German international.

It appeared as though we were headed for our first defeat of pre-season. Burstow ensured that didn't happen.

A free-kick was kept alive in the Dortmund penalty area, Fernandez headed the ball toward the young striker, who guided his effort into the corner to earn the Blues a more than deserved draw.

What it means...

The fixture in Chicago brought an end to our summer tour – and you suspect Pochettino will be pleased with three wins and two draws from five matches.

What's next...

The players head back to England overnight and will continue their pre-season work at Cobham in the days ahead.
