Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez says emphatically defeating Paris Saint-Germain to lift the Club World Cup has shown everyone 'how good we are and what we can do'.
The Blues produced an almost-flawless performance at MetLife Stadium yesterday evening to be crowned world champions. The three-goal margin of victory did not flatter Enzo Maresca's side.
Cole Palmer opened the scoring in the 22nd minute and added a second, with an identical finish, on the half-hour mark. Joao Pedro then made it 3-0 to the Blues before the interval as he latched onto a Palmer pass to lift the ball over Gianluigi Donnarumma.
PSG, who won the Champions League in May, fashioned chances of their own. Yet if our defence was beaten, Sanchez wasn't. The Spain international produced several impressive stops to ensure he finished the game with another clean sheet.
Sanchez's performances during the Club World Cup resulted in the 27-year-old receiving the Golden Glove award, given to the goalkeeper adjudged to have been the best at the tournament. That was presented before our trophy lift.
But the Blues goalkeeper was focused solely on highlighting what had been achieved by the collective, and also what is still to come from our young, talented squad.
He said: 'I was talking to some of the boys [ahead of the game] and I said we’ve got a great chance to make history here and win. We believed we were going to, but we couldn’t expect to win like this: 3-0, clean sheet, dominated the game, could’ve scored a couple more goals. It’s a dream come true.
‘It’s all we wanted. We have been away from home – away from our families – for a month, and we have been working hard. People said we had the easier path [to the final], but it wasn’t easy.
'We worked hard and we deserved this win. In the final, we showed how good we are and what we can do.’
Sanchez certainly showcased his quality across the 90 minutes. His distribution was key in helping the Blues establish a first-half lead, with several pinpoint passes high down the Chelsea right leading to chances for Maresca's side.
He also made big stops at important moments, denying efforts from PSG's array of attacking talent.
'The saves for me, they weren’t crazy hard, but they were difficult because the pitch was very sticky,' the goalkeeper reflected.
'So they become more difficult because of that. There was a save from Dembele, a shot from Barcola, a couple of saves in the first half. It was a clean game; I’m very happy with it.
‘We are always going to be underestimated, but we know our quality and how good we are. We knew they had quality, but we knew we had more. And if we matched their pace and intensity, we felt we would win the game. That’s what we did.’
The Blues squad will now have a short break before the 2025/26 campaign gets underway. It will be an opportunity for players and staff alike to relax, refresh, reflect, and refocus for the challenges ahead.
And Sanchez is excited by the quality and potential within the group. He said: ‘We have already shown the world, so what we have to do is keep it the same. We are only going to get better.
'The boys are young, 21 years old, 22 years old. Imagine when these players are 24, 25, 26. We are going to be a solid squad that wins a lot and does well. We’re going to do very well.’
