Romeo Lavia felt the Blues’ togetherness was key to overcoming a tough Leeds United side at Wembley.
As is typical when Chelsea and Leeds go head-to-head, it was a hard-fought contest under the arch as Enzo Fernandez’s header made the difference as we secured a 17th FA Cup final, where we’ll face Manchester City in May.
Midfielder Lavia felt we deserved the win on Sunday afternoon, and, after a difficult few weeks, explained how he never felt the Blues’ spirit waver.
Lavia reflected: ‘Sometimes when you have a few results that don't go your way, you feel like everything is against you. The reality is that as long as we stick together, it will turn around in the end, especially given the quality of the team.
‘It was good for the team, and you can see that we worked hard to get it right after Tuesday, which, as a team, we thought was unacceptable; it was important to get it right at Wembley. We used that frustration heading into the next game to try to get it right, and we did that against Leeds.’
With former club Manchester City now standing between us and a trophy, Lavia insists all our focus will be on how we can cause the Cityzens problems, with the likes of match-winner Enzo Fernandez key to unlocking our potential.
‘I think in every game it’s all about us, it’s not about the team in front of us,’ Lavia continued. ‘We are going to approach the game the same way we did today, with the right spirit, and anything is possible.
‘Enzo is a very important player for us, and I enjoy playing alongside him personally. The whole team has so much appreciation for what he does. We are glad to have him, and he was very important in the semi-final.’
Lavia was also quick to credit interim head coach Calum McFarlane, pointing to his influence in helping the Blues regroup and respond positively at Wembley.
‘We know Calum very, very well,’ he added. ‘It’s just about adapting to what has happened and trying not to look at the past and moving forward as soon as possible, especially in this competition where the aim is to get a trophy, which we know is possible. We tried to prepare the game as best we could.’
