Liam Rosenior says this Chelsea team will only reach its potential when we learn how to deal with in-game difficulties.

As the head coach pointed out after our 5-2 loss to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday evening, there was plenty to like about the Blues’ performance in the Parc des Princes. That was until the final quarter-of-an-hour, when the game unravelled.

A defensive error allowed PSG to retake the lead at 3-2 and we were then not capable of closing the game out, conceding twice late on. It is an issue Rosenior has long identified, and he takes responsibility for the lack of progress made in solving it.

‘We’ve spoken since my first day about reacting positively and staying calm in pressure moments, and that’s why it’s on me,’ said the head coach.

‘I need us to maintain our calm in the moment we have setbacks. A lot of what we did – the intensity of our press, some of our football, the chances we created – was outstanding, but if we don’t overcome this hurdle we won’t reach our potential. It’s my job to find the answer to it.

‘We are very close to being an outstanding team, but we have to overcome this hurdle yesterday to make sure that happens.’

After the very disappointing ending to the match in Paris, Rosenior also underlined the importance of sticking together and responding positively with more vital fixtures around the corner.

‘What we have to do with all the players is look after each other,’ he stressed.

‘This is a big test of our character. We have a huge game in two days against Newcastle. I want to see a real reaction and a resilience about us in the next game.’
