Toni Rudiger is the latest player to offer up some recommendations of what to watch on TV during this period of lockdown. The German defender features Will Smith throwbacks, and crime dramas in his top three picks for good viewing on Netflix.
1. Fresh Prince of Bel Air (series)
‘I like to watch stuff that is funny and makes me laugh.’
This classic series probably needs no introduction, but if you don’t know your Carltons from your Geoffreys, then in simple terms it’s a coming-of-age comedy in which Will Smith is moved from his rough Philadelphia neighbourhood to go and live with his Aunt and Uncle in posh Bel-Air. His two stuck-up cousins fall victim to many of his jokes along the way.
Smith practically plays himself in a show responsible for perhaps the most heartbreaking piece of television in the history of the small screen, which you can cry over once more in the clip below.
2. Narcos Mexico (series)
‘This is a different one, the other one was with Escobar but this one is based in Mexico.’
The third instalment of the hugely popular Narcos series charts the DEA’s pursuit of the richest drug trafficking organisation in the world following Pablo Escobar’s death: the Cali Cartel. Buckle up for another thrilling ride through drug warfare as the story heads to Mexico.
3. Top Boy
‘That’s a very good series.’
Billed as the UK’s answer to The Wire, Toni’s final recommendation takes us into a crime-rich housing estate in east London, where we follow the lives of a group of people involved with drug dealing and street gangs. Fun fact: Series one and two originally aired on Channel 4, before Drake - a superfan of the show, stepped in to bring the third season to Netflix, with the Toronto-born rapper adding his name to the credits as executive producer.
