Teenager Ryan Kavuma-McQueen has been reflecting on a whirlwind couple of weeks with Chelsea, which saw him make his senior debut and help our Under-21s finish top of the Premier League 2 table, before being named that competition’s Player of the Month.
Having joined the club at development centre level and progressed through the ranks in the Chelsea Academy from Under-8s to join the Under-21s squad for this season, the winger has continued to flourish both on and off the pitch.
He signed his first professional contract at the start of 2026, shortly after celebrating his 17th birthday, and recently got his first experience of the men’s game when he was handed his senior debut by Liam Rosenior, coming off the bench to replace Romeo Lavia for the final 12 minutes of our 7-0 victory over Port Vale in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
Less than a week later, Kavuma-McQueen and his Under-21s team-mates were confirmed as winners of the league phase of this season’s Premier League 2 by finishing at the top of the standings, having recorded 14 victories across the 20-game campaign and scored 52 goals.
To cap off those achievements, he then received the Premier League 2 Player of the Month award for his performances in March.
‘It’s been a really good couple of weeks and it has meant a lot to my family and me,’ he said, looking back at an eventful period in his young career.
‘I told them straight away when I won the award. It means a lot to them, and for me to give back after everything they’ve done for me makes it even more special.’
The winger has been a regular in this season’s Premier League 2 campaign, scoring five goals. Four of those came in March, a month in which he featured in all four fixtures as the Blues remained unbeaten.
His stand-out performances during that period included a brace in the 4-1 victory over Birmingham City, as well as goals in 4-0 wins against Sunderland and Wolverhampton Wanderers. He also made a strong attacking contribution in the 2-0 win over Manchester United.
After collecting his Premier League 2 Player of the Month award at Cobham, Kavuma-McQueen spoke about the recognition.
‘It’s a special moment for me, for sure,’ the 17-year-old continued. ‘It feels great to win the award and hopefully there’s more to come.
‘My favourite goal was definitely the one against Wolves - I thought it was a good finish. I also loved the moment when I scored twice against Birmingham City. The celebration was good as well!
‘Winning this award has made me even more motivated and ambitious to keep improving. Hopefully I can continue performing well and have more opportunities to win awards in the future.’
With his first individual award of the season secured, Kavuma-McQueen’s focus now turns to what lies ahead, as he knows there is plenty more work to do both to further his own development at Chelsea and secure a successful end to the season for our Under-21s.
Following the league-phase triumph, the young Blues progress into the Premier League 2 title play-offs as the top seeds, where we will host ties from the round of 16 onwards in a knockout format to decide the national champions at that level.
‘Finishing top of the league was a special moment,’ he added. ‘We stuck together and managed to get the results we needed, which meant a lot.
‘I hope we can carry that momentum into the play-offs and go on to win the trophy to complete the campaign. That would be really special.’
The first challenge in the play-offs arrives in a last-16 tie on home soil at Kingsmeadow.
The confirmed date and time of that game will be announced shortly, but tickets are already on sale here to see Kavuma-McQueen and the rest of the Chelsea Under-21s squad in action, with free tickets available for all season ticket holders, members and Under-20s until midday the day before the game.
