Sam Kerr was delighted to mark her much-anticipated return to Chelsea’s starting line-up with two goals as we comprehensively defeated St Polten in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
It had been 692 days since the Blues were last able to call upon Kerr from the start in a match, following the striker’s long absence while recovering from injury.
She has been eased back into the action off the bench by head coach Sonia Bompastor this term, and made her return from the start in Tuesday evening’s Champions League trip to Austria.
Kerr wasted no time making her mark on the game, finding the back of the net twice in the second half as we defeated St Polten 6-0.
‘I’m just relieved to be back and enjoying my football,’ said Sam after our victory. ‘I didn’t really think too much about being injured and all of that, I’m just enjoying my football. It’s nice when you have nights like last night, when you can get a big reward.’
We didn’t have things all our own way in Austria, as St Polten dropped deep and looked to frustrate the Blues. Despite opening the scoring early on, it wasn’t until the 44th minute that we made it 2-0. The floodgates eventually opened in the final 15 minutes of the game.
‘I thought we had to be patient,' reflected Kerr. 'We knew they would defend well and make it difficult for us.
‘We got two goals in the first half and then as the game went on it just opened up more and more. But we had to be patient all night and I thought there were some good goals.’
The 6-0 victory at St Polten follows the 4-0 win over Paris FC at Stamford Bridge and takes the Blues up to second place in the Champions League table.
Despite that impressive European form, Kerr and her Chelsea team-mates aren’t getting carried away, as we pursue the one trophy missing from our cabinet.
‘We’re just going to take it one game at a time,’ insisted the Australian international. 'This competition is so tough, it’s hard to get far, so we’re just going to take it one game at a time and hopefully go from there.’
