It’s been an exciting few months for Chelsea’s Sam Kerr. On the pitch, the striker made her return to action in September, while off the field, over the Christmas break she married partner Kristie Mewis back home in Australia.
The pair flew to Australia following our final match of 2025 on 21 December, before Kerr joined our winter training camp with the rest of the squad directly afterwards.
We sat down with the striker in Portugal to find out more about her wedding and hear how she feels about her season so far.
‘We had the best time,’ said Kerr. ‘We put a lot of thought into every little detail, so it was exactly what we wanted. It turned out to be incredible, and yeah, the photos honestly don't even do it justice. It was an amazing night.
‘It would have been nice to have a honeymoon, but that’s the life of a footballer. We can honeymoon in the summer. We had been engaged for two and a half years and if anyone knows Christie, she's a bit crazy with all her planning and stuff, so she did most of it, and we had been planning it for at least two years.’
Heading straight back into work brought Kerr back down to earth quickly after her dream wedding. Yet being the serial winner that she is, meant the 32-year-old was immediately looking forward to getting going in the second half of the campaign.
‘This is the good part of the season where you get to reap the rewards for all the work you did in the first part,’ she continued. ‘Hopefully, that means trophies. It’s the fun part of the season. I always look forward to it. That's why we all play!
‘There's always motivation at a club like Chelsea, but especially during the most important time of the season, when there's a trophy to be won, and we are always there or thereabouts.’
Even after a lengthy layoff, Kerr still leads the Chelsea scoring charts so far this season, having netted seven times in all competitions.
During our last three matches of 2025, the striker provided a well-worked assist for Alyssa Thompson in our 3-0 Women’s Super League win over Brighton before scoring in our crucial 2-1 victory over Wolfsburg, which saw us directly qualify for the Women’s Champions League knockout stages.
In our final match of the year, she also netted a quick-fire brace in the 9-1 Women’s League Cup win over Liverpool. And having found the back of the net on her first substitute appearance back in the side following 20 months on the sidelines against Aston Villa in September, it was clear that Kerr had started as she meant to go on.
‘I’m getting back to my best level,’ she continued. ‘Every time I went out onto the pitch in the few games before Christmas, I scored or assisted. I think now it's just down to playing time, and I'd obviously like to be on the pitch as much as possible.
‘Every week, I can feel myself getting better and better. During the Wolfsburg and Liverpool games, I felt like myself again.
‘I don't think anyone expected me to score in my first game back, but I have such high standards for myself that even though I'd been out for so long, I did expect to score. To be honest, I probably would have preferred my 100th goal not to be in my first game back. There was so much going on at once.
‘Every goal is important to me, so it did feel like a relief, but it’s also kind of just what I do.’
With seven goals in the bag already after her lengthy layoff and 106 Chelsea goals to her name, it’s hard to argue with that statement.
